Understanding Dog Constipation

Since dogs are man's best friend, most dog owners are concerned about dog constipation and other health problems that could arise. The best way to treat canine constipation is to prevent it and the best way to do that is to understand it.

The first thing that you need to understand about constipation in dogs is that a lot of those problems are created by man, or at least by the fact that dogs now live with man. Dogs used to be wild animals. As wild animals, they ate a very different diet. They also had far less exposures to foreign materials, chemicals and, of course, human foods.

A constipation dog could have developed those symptoms for a number of reasons. Most of the time, it's going to revolve around these four things, though:

• Type Of Dog Food
• Dog Treats Or Human Foods That The Dog Eats
• Foreign Objects

Hydration

A dog's hydration level, like a human's, is very important. Luckily, unlike a cat, most dog's actually drink plenty of water. However, sometimes that isn't enough.

You see, constipation dog health issues most often arise because the dog is eating highly processed dog food. Such processed foods are often lacking nutritional value. So, many dog constipation health problems can be avoided by simply feeding your dog healthier food.

Treats

Of course, that also extends to treats. You might think that feeding your dog certain dog treats or human foods on special occasions is, well, a treat. However, it can actually be hazardous to your dog, creating constipation or other problems. That's why it's a good idea to minimize feeding your dog unhealthy treats and check with the dog's vet to see which treats are appropriate for your dog.

Foreign Objects

If your dog is displaying constipation symptoms, such as tender stomach, lack of stools, gas, not wanting to eat or whining a lot, it could have also been caused by foreign objects. Unfortunately, many dogs are foreign object fiends. They will eat anything from sticks to underwear to coins and many things in between. So, it's very important to keep an eye on your dog.

Treatment

The great thing is that, even if you can't prevent dog constipation, it is easily treated. All you have to do is watch your dog closely for symptoms. Then you can consult the vet to find the best home remedies or medical intervention, based on the cause.
